Raising
an Assistance Dog
Raising an Assistance Dog can be a
very rewarding experience. We are always looking for new
puppy raisers. If you are considering this, call
405-224-7715 and request an information packet be sent to you in
the mail. We can also answer any questions you may have.
Frequently
Asked Questions:
How long do
we keep the assistance dog in training? Approximately 12 months
Am I allowed
to take the pup in training out in public places?
Yes! Oklahoma has a state law covering service dogs in
training. They are allowed in public places where other
"pets" are not allowed to go, such as grocery stores and
restaurants. Even though we are permitted by state
law, we always ask permission. Our pups in training are
polite members of the community.
How often am
I required to take the pup out of the house? At least
3 times per week is the minimum.
Where should
I take the pup? You should take the pup anywhere a
person with a disability might go - which is exactly where you
probably go in the course of a week. It is also good to
visit less regular places too, like concerts or ball games.
How much does
it cost? The pup is treated like part of your
family. You purchase dog food, toys, bones, collars,
leashes, and treats. We provide vet care.
What if I
want to use my own vet? Paying for vet care would be
a wonderful donation to A New Leash On Life, Inc. The
money you spend on vet care, as well as other necessities, is
tax-deductible (consult your tax advisor, of course).
What kind of
dogs do you raise? Mostly Retrievers - Labs or
Goldens - and an occasional Labradoodle or Standard Poodle.
We look for dogs that are fanatic retrievers, willing to work
under direction, and people oriented. These traits generally
lead us to the dogs listed or mixes of those breeds.
