Mission Statement:

To implement positive reinforcement-based dog training programs in correctional facilities; to train unwanted dogs that are temperamentally sound and healthy to their best potential.

Provide training support for Assistance Dogs in the community.

Who We Are:

A New Leash On Life is a 501(c)3 tax exempt charitable organization that currently provides professional dog training instruction to inmates at correctional facilities.  The inmates are instructed in positive, reinforcement training methods and work with select dogs from local shelters.  All the dogs begin with basic manners, various fun tricks and are socialized making them highly desirable as family pets.  They are evaluated for natural traits needed for particular jobs and their training is tailored for that job."

Our experience shows the training program is not only beneficial for the dogs, but makes a significant difference in the lives of inmates, staff and families.  The inmates increased confidence, empathy and ability to share emotions with the dogs open new ways of thinking and relating to others.  Many of the inmates will be eligible for parole and since prison is a regimented environment, this program gives them the opportunity to be responsible for their job, patient, exercise self-control, keep on schedule and develop and meet short and long-term goals; all behaviors they need to have in place when they return to their families and the community.

Dogs chosen for the program are, usually, between one and two years old, have sound minds, safe temperaments and whose faults can be corrected with positive training techniques.  These are dogs who would most likely not be adopted from the shelter due to their age, size or unruly behavior.

Pups destined for Assistance Dog jobs are donated by breeders and raised by volunteer puppy raisers.  They enter the prison training program when they are around 14 months old and their training is completed in the home of the client.
